Missing aircraft located – Cape Liptrap, Victoria
A search coordinated by the Rescue Coordination Centre – Australia (RCC) has located an aircraft missing since Saturday 17 November 2007 on a flight between Moorabbin, Victoria and Merimbula in New South Wales.
The wreckage of the twin-engine Cessna 337 light aircraft was located south of Inverloch, just off the beach at Cape Liptrap in Victoria following reports received from members of the public. The impact of the crash appears to be non-survivable.
The wreckage was located at approximately 4.40pm AEDST by a Sikorski S76 helicopter following an extensive three-day air and ground search involving 23 aircraft – 11 helicopters and 12 fixed-wing aircraft. Support was also provided by the Victorian and New South Wales Police.
The plane was last seen departing Moorabbin airport in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon and was due to arrive in Merimbula at approximately 4.00pm, but failed to do so.
The accident will now be a matter for a Coronial Investigation by the Victorian Police. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been notified.
