Missing aircraft located in Queensland

An ultra light aircraft that was reported overdue on a flight between Mt Garnett and Charters Towers in Queensland about 2.20pm yesterday, 13 July 2008 has been located.

The Australian Maritime Safety’s Rescue Coordination Centre – Australia has been coordinating the search for the missing aircraft about 50 nautical miles North West of Charters Towers.

The search this morning included a total of 8 fixed wing aircraft and five helicopters between Kangaroo Hills and Charters Towers and was made difficult by low cloud cover within the search area.

Wreckage of the aircraft was discovered at approximately 10.30am today and it has been confirmed that the two people on board the aircraft have not survived.

This matter is now being dealt with by Townsville Police. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has been informed and Recreation Aviation Australia will be investigating.
