Search for two men in the Gulf of Carpentaria

Australian Search and Rescue is coordinating an aerial search for two men last seen in a 4.2 metre dinghy on Saturday, 2 March at the mouth of the Staaten River in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

The two men in their mid to late 20s were en route from Karumba to Nassau River when they were seen by a fisherman at about 7.45pm (AEST) at Staaten River.

They have one flare on board but are not known to be carrying lifejackets or a satellite distress beacon.

Two surface vessels, a helicopter and two fixed wing aircraft are involved in this morning’s search. The Queensland Police has overall coordination of the operation.

The weather in the area is calm with 5 to 10 knot east-north-easterly winds.
