Emergency Towage Capability

Under the new Emergency Towage Vessel (ETV) arrangements, AMSA will maintain an Emergency Towage Capability in each of the regions illustrated below:

ETV - Level 1

Pacific Responder

A 24/7 dedicated AMSA chartered ETV that will provide emergency towage and first response capability in the PSSA in the Torres Strait and Northern Great Barrier Reef area.

The Pacific Responder will be based in cairns, but will spend the majority of its time at sea, available for emergency towage tasking by AMSA.

Operational Roles

The Pacific Responder's operational roles include, but are not limited to, first strike emergency towage capability in the event of a shipping incident/casualty that might include:

  • Preserving life
  • Protecting the marine environment from pollution
  • Fighting fire
  • Towing a vessel out of immediate danger
  • Stabilizing the casualty to prevent further damage to the ship or the environment, and
  • Towing or escorting a casualty to a place of refuge (as opposed to a place of repair)
