Equipment
Since the purchase of $4,334,747 of equipment following recommendations in the 1993 National Plan Review, an ongoing equipment acquisition program has been developed. As part of this program, oil spill response equipment valued at approximately $500,000 is purchased on an annual basis. This equipment not only replaces existing equipment but also enhances the existing response capabilities. Primary focus during the reporting period was to ensure that all ports used by shipping have a basic set of equipment incorporating booms and skimmers to enable a first strike capability.
Items purchased during the reporting period include:
| 1100 metres of General Purpose Boom - Mackay (Qld) 300 metres - Townsville (Qld) 200 metres - Thursday Island (Qld) 300 metres - Thevenard (SA) 300 metres |
Four small weir type skimmer units - Port Lincoln (SA) - Bell Bay (Tas) - Mourilyan (Qld) - Darwin (NT) |
| 600 metres of Shoreline Protection Boom - Dampier (WA) 300 metres - Cairns (Qld) 300 metres |
Three Shoreline Vacuum Units - Melbourne - Mackay - Brisbane |
| Oil Transfer Pump - Melbourne | Two satellite tracking drifter buoys - Central |
| Eight handheld VHF Marine Radios - Central | Three portable GPS units - Central |
| Outboard Motor for Spill Response Vessel - Port Kembla Port Corporation | Two Flexidams - Newcastle Port Corporation |
| Two Flexidams and 1 Anchor kit each - Fremantle - Dampier |
Two Lancer barges - Fremantle |
| Fitout of response vessel Conch - Port Lincoln | 5.2 M Kayfa Punt and Motor (40 hp) - Darwin |
| Rotortech TC3 Helicopter Dispersant Spray Bucket - Darwin | Eight Anchor Kits - Darwin |
| Two Structurflex Oil Recovery Tanks (10,000 litre) - Darwin | Three Lancer Barges purchased by AMOSC - AMOSC, Geelong |
Additionally, four oiled wildlife rescue, cleaning and rehabilitation kits are being developed. The kits have been designed to assist with the treatment of around 500 birds and support a response in remote locations. The kits will consist of a range of veterinary supplies, health and safety items, transport boxes and logistical support materials.
