Oiled Wildlife Response Kits
National Plan to Combat Pollution of the Sea by Oil and other Noxious and Hazardous Substances
Oiled Wildlife Cleaning & Rehabilitation
One of the recommendations from the Review of the Response into the Iron Baron Oil Spill stated:
"Appropriate wildlife rescue and rehabilitation kits should be included in any pool of response material and be made available, under the national Plan, at key locations around the country."
In response to this recommendation four kits were assembled, and transported by AMSA to the following locations and have become part of the National Plan equipment stockpile.
- Sydney - New South Wales
- Darwin - Northern Territory
- Townsville - Queensland
- Como - Western Australia
Further to this, the second meeting of the National Plan Operations Group (NPOG 2) approved the assembly and distribution of an additional three kits to complete the Oiled Wildlife Response Kit acquisition program. These kits have been placed in the following locations
- Dampier - Western Australia
- Adelaide - South Australia
- Brisbane - Queensland
With the existing oiled wildlife kits at AMOSC Geelong, Victoria and State owned equipment in Tasmania the National Plan has oiled wildlife kits with a capacity to treat in the vicinity of 4000-5000 birds.
Oiled Wildlife Response Kit Policy and Loan Agreements
An Oiled Wildlife Response Kit Policy and Loan Agreement has been developed to clearly set out the States/NT responsibilities for the maintenance and management of the kits. This policy was endorsed at NPOG 2.
A copy of the Policy and the Loan Agreement can be found at the following links.
Cleaning Agents
One of the outcomes from the fourteenth meeting of the National Plan Advisory Committee (NPAC 14) was a recommendation that Oiled Wildlife Response Kits should be updated with new detergents. This followed a study conducted by Taronga Zoo, commissioned by AMSA, to test the detergents currently in the kits and compare them to a number of other commercially available cleaning agents.
The main recommendation from this report was that the existing detergents should be removed from the kits and be replaced with Dawn© and Biosolve© cleaning agents. AMSA distributed these new detergents to the existing wildlife kits in July 2000.
Kit contents
Taronga Zoo, in conjunction with the Zoological Parks Board of NSW, was commissioned to review the veterinary supplies in the kits by the National Plan Environment Working Group. Taronga Zoo provided AMSA with an alternate listing of the veterinary supplies that should be in the kits. Further to this AMSA has incorporated these recommendations into the three (3) kits that have recently been distributed.
