Prosecutions for ship sourced pollution are generally bought under the following legislation within the various jurisdiction in Australia:

Commonwealth

Protection of the Sea (Prevention from Pollution from Ships) Act 1983 - (administered by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Act implements the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) in Australian Commonwealth waters). Jurisdiction under this Act extends from 3 nautical miles (nm) out to the Australia Exclusive Economic Zone (200 nm) and also applies within the 3nm limits where the State/Northern Territory does not have complementary legislation.
