On 19 February 2008 a Panamanian General Cargo ship was passing through the Torres Strait when it struck shallow water near Larpent Bank. The ship narrowly missed two other oncoming ships.

On 11 August 2005 a 6686gt Korean General Cargo ship was passing west bound through the Prince of Wales Channel in the Torres Strait about 1.2 nautical miles east of Hammond Rock. The ship narrowly avoided running into shallow water by approximately 150-200 metres.

On 6 September 2002 a Philippines registered 27986gt Bulk Carrier ran aground at the Herald Patches near Wednesday Island in the Torres Strait. The ship was on a voyage to India after loading coal at Dalryple Bay in Northern Queensland. The ship had travelled through Palm Passage near Dalrymple Bay to the outer shipping route. The ship was refloated on the high tide later that day, thankfully with no pollution.
