AMSA has the responsibility for issuing the maritime qualifications for all crew members on Australian ships operating under the Navigation Act 1912 , and to regulate their issue to standards meeting the needs of the Australian Shipping Industry and Australia's obligations under the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 as amended (STCW95) .

Holders of overseas qualifications wishing to work on Australian ships are required to hold an equivalent Australian marine qualification , relevant to their duties.

AMSA also administers the licensing requirements for all Coastal Pilots.

The detailed requirements for issue of a certificate of competency, certificate of recognition or endorsement are contained in the applicable legislation, which is the Australian Navigation Act 1912 and Marine Orders Part 3 - Seagoing Qualifications.

If it is considered necessary to attend an AMSA marine office it is recommended to make an appointment with the relevant examiner prior to attendance as examiners also have external duties, such as ship inspections, surveys, etc. A list of AMSA offices where examiners are located, including contact details, may be found in the "Examinations" subsection of this "Marine Qualifications" section.

Please note: this information on this website is only to be used as a guide and persons requiring formal assessment for a qualification must make written application to AMSA.
