Documentary Evidence to be submitted with an Application for Certificate of Competency
Completed and signed Application Forms for AMSA Qualifications should be accompanied by:
-
Payment of the application fee for the qualification/certificate sought (by cheque or money order, payable to AMSA, in Australian Dollars); and
-
one passport size colour photograph of the applicant; and
-
certified copies (not originals) of documents that verify:
-
age and nationality (copies of birth certificate or passport required);
-
performance of specified qualifying sea service, such as letters from employer companies, on company letterhead, in addition to certificates of discharge, watch-keeping certificate, (deck officers) and testimonials of sea service (engineer officers);
-
for the engineer watchkeeper certificate only, completion of approved practical training ashore;
-
for cadets and trainees, completion of cadetship/traineeship, in the form of a letter from their shipping company or organisation responsible for their cadetship/traineeship, and a completed training record book, where applicable;
-
satisfactory completion of an approved college course;
-
completion of approved short courses/specialist training;
-
current certificate held; and
-
compliance with prescribed medical and sight test standards.

Applicants may also submit any other documents that may assist the assessment of their entitlement for AMSA qualifications.

Originals of the documents listed above must be shown to AMSA before a certificate can be issued. Candidates should bring these original documents with them when attending an AMSA Office to sit for an oral exam. Original documents will be returned to Applicants.

All documents presented to AMSA offices by candidates will be checked at the source. No letters of eligibility will be issued until confirmation of the authenticity of the documents and duration/type of sea service has been received. Candidates should provide contact details of their employer.
