National Search and Rescue School

The mission of the National Search and Rescue School is to provide competency based Search and Rescue (SAR) training which anticipates and responds to client needs and the effects of technological change. The School is committed to innovation in learning practices, freedom of inquiry, equality of opportunity, and the pursuit of excellence in teaching, research and scholarship, and to proactive interaction with the national and international Search and Rescue community.

The National Search and Rescue School resulted from the amalgamations brought about by the restructuring of the Australian Commonwealth Search and Rescue organisations. The newly formed AusSAR formed on 1 July 1997 as an amalgamation of Air Services' Rescue Coordination Centres in Brisbane and Melbourne, the Air Services National Search and Rescue School and the AMSA Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. AusSAR was renamed the Emergency Response Division when the Environment Pollution Response section joined the division.  ER is centrally located in Canberra and the National Search and Rescue School was formed to provide training for Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) staff, as well as national and international training for Search and Rescue personnel as required.
