Temporary Passes for Yacht Race Participants
The purpose of this page is to provide an outline of the process of obtaining a temporary pass. Full details are provided in section 23 of the Shipping Registration Act 1981 and Shipping Registration Regulation 17.
Background
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has agreed with the Australian Yachting Federation (AYF) to grant Temporary Passes to unregistered Australian yachts participating in races between Australian ports and foreign ports, provided that:
- the race is conducted by an yachting organisation which is affiliated with the Australian Yachting Federation; and
- the Australian Yachting Federation provides written confirmation of the affiliation and the details of the race and the participants.
Procedure
- Each yacht owner should make applications for two temporary passes: one for the outgoing voyage, another for the return.
- The applications and fees ($155 x 2) should be forwarded direct to the Shipping Registration Office
- The race organiser should arrange for the Australian Yachting Federation to provide a confirmatory letter to the Shipping Registration Office.
It may be convenient for the race organiser to collect the applications, fees and the Australian Yachting Federation letter and forward them in a batch to the Shipping Registration Office.
Registered yachts will not need Temporary Passes. However owners of registered yachts should ensure that their ownership is registered and that they have the yachts Registration Certificate. The Shipping Registration office can provide forms for the transfer of ownership and the granting of replacement Certificates if needs be. The Office can also provide details of the AUSREP system.
Payment
The GST does not apply to services supplied by the Shipping Registration Office.
Cheques should be made payable to: Australian Maritime Safety Authority
