Shipping Safety

Australia, in terms of tonnes of cargo shipped and kilometres travelled, is the world's fifth largest shipping nation, we also have some of the most sensitive marine areas in the world. To ensure the balance is maintained requires vigilence on the part of the shipping industry.

To assist the shipping industry maintain our marine environment, the Australian Government, through the Australian Maritime Safety Authority implements and enforces a number of legislative requirements on the industry.

This section outlines those requirements in relation to the safe operation of vessels, over 300 gross registered tonnes, operating in Australian waters. It also provides information on those vessels which do not meet those requirements and information of relevance to the industry.
