Great Barrier Reef review of ship safety and pollution prevention measures
The Commonwealth Minister for Transport and Regional Services, the Hon John Anderson, announced on 6 November 2000 the review of measures to promote ship safety and pollution prevention in the Great Barrier Reef. He released terms of reference for the review on 24 November 2000.
The review is being overseen by a Steering Committee comprising senior officers of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the Queensland Department of Transport and the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services.
A final report is to be presented to the Minister by 29 June 2001.
Consultation Process
The terms of reference require wide consultation with interested parties, including the maritime industry, indigenous communities and environmental groups, as well as other Federal and State Departments and agencies. As the review is examining measures that have direct impact on pilots, there are special consultative arrangements to ensure their views are fully considered.
Submissions are invited from interested parties and should be made as soon as possible but no later than 31 March 2001.
The review has been advertised [
PDF: 6KB] widely in the national and regional press.
To assist the consultation process, a Discussion Paper canvassing broad issues that the review is seeking to examine is available.
The Steering Committee is convening a series of consultative forums in Cairns on Tuesday 6 February 2001, Townsville on Wednesday 7 February 2001 and Brisbane on Thursday 8 February 2001. Interested parties wishing to attend these forums should contact the Review Secretariat for details at:
