Marine Navigation (Regulatory Functions) Levy
This levy is used to fund AMSA's maritime safety regulation activities.
The Maritime Standards Division establishes the regulatory framework, while the Maritime Operations Division is responsible for establishing the seaworthiness of Australian vessels through periodic assessment and survey, ensuring that persons on board Australian ships are appropriately qualified and that effective measures concerning navigational safety and onboard safety related procedures are in place.
In addition, foreign vessels calling at Australian ports are subject to random inspection to ensure compliance with international regulations. This is a process known as "Port State Control". Ships with serious deficiencies are detained in port until the problems are rectified.
Marine surveyors, who perform the inspections and surveys of Australian and foreign vessels, are located at all major Australian ports.
Australia is represented at the international forum for development of maritime standards - the International Maritime Organization - by officers from the Maritime Standards Division, who regularly attend specialist sub-committee meetings. This allows Australia to keep pace with and have direct input to the formation of international maritime safety regulations.
The requirement to pay the Marine Navigation (Regulatory Functions) Levy is identical to those of the Marine Navigation Levy. Levy Rates are available.
