Draught Limitation in Torres Strait

Marine Notice 23/2007
Supersedes Marine Notice 33/2002

Shipowners, ship operators, masters and others responsible for the safe navigation of Australian and overseas registered ships in the Great Barrier Reef and Torres Strait are reminded that the maximum draught for ships transiting Gannet Passage and Prince of Wales Channel is 12.2 metres.

Masters of ships proposing to transit the Torres Strait, Great North East Channel or the inner route of the Great Barrier Reef are strongly advised to contact a pilot service for early advice on navigational requirements relating to transit times, under-keel clearances and pilot boarding arrangements. Masters should note that two pilotage companies provide pilots licensed by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

Further information on navigation in the Great Barrier Reef, draught limitations and under-keel clearance may be found in Australian Notices to Mariners numbers 10C, 21 and 23 contained in the Annual Australian Notices to Mariners published by the Hydrographic Service RAN.
