Protection Zone for Submarine Cable SEA-MEW-E3 off Perth

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has declared a new protection zone around submarine telecommunications cable SEA-MEW-E3 off Perth, Western Australia. The protection zone will take effect on 01 February 2008.
In general terms the protection zone extends to seaward, for approximately 51 nautical miles, from the vicinity of City Beach (31° 55’ S, 115° 45’ E) to the 2000 metre depth contour. The protected zone extends for one nautical mile either side of the cable.
A diagram of the zone is attached to this Notice. Precise limits of the zones may be obtained from the ACMA internet site: www.ACMA.gov.au/subcables and will be shown on the relevant nautical charts.
Masters of SOLAS class vessels are advised that anchoring within the protection zone is prohibited and very heavy penalties are applicable under Australian law from 01 February 2008.
Other maritime activities are also prohibited or restricted in the zone; details should be obtained from the ACMA internet site.
