Why reporting incidents to the Inspectorate is important
As the Inspectorate, AMSA uses information from incident Alerts and Reports to take appropriate action including the development and promotion of improvements in maritime health and safety. The benefits to industry of reporting incidents to the Inspectorate include:
- AMSA is aware of the incident and working conditions so that it can promote practices to prevent further similar incidents and associated unsafe practices
- AMSA can provide advice to the shipping industry and seafarers via Marine Notices, identifying OH&S issues and any emerging trends and concerns regarding health and safety
- AMSA and industry can promote improvements to safety culture and the occupational environment
- AMSA can ensure compliance by shipping industry at all levels from crew, master, to ship operators with relevant obligations under the OH&S(MI) Act and its regulations.
