West Australian Department of Planning and Infrastructure. Following the success of ATON 2005 (a two-day aids to navigation symposium held in Canberra in March 2005), ATON 2007 will facilitate discussion and information sharing between organisations charged with responsibility for providing marine aids to navigation.

The Symposium will be timely in terms of Australia’s AtoN regulators preparing for a future national audit by the International Maritime Organization of AtoN provision. There will also be a major focus on Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment in recognition of the widening range of AIS issues emerging that have significant implications for AtoN regulators and ports.

A four-day programme is being proposed for ATON 2007 and takes into account feedback that was collected at ATON 2005.

ATON Program

Day One (28th August) will be an industry day, at which commercial providers of aids to navigation equipment, systems, services and infrastructure will be invited to provide presentations on recent innovations and developments within their respective fields as well as displays of their products and services. A Welcome Reception will be held in the evening.

Day Two (29th August) will be dedicated to policy and operational issues pertaining to the use of AIS equipment. Commercial providers with an involvement in AIS will be invited to participate.

Day Three (30th August) will be dedicated to issues relevant to aids to navigation regulators (there will be no commercial providers present). Topics to be covered on day three include audits, updates on international developments such as e-navigation, heritage matters, AtoN maintenance and information management. There will also be an opportunity for participating organisations to provide briefs on recent projects or initiatives that might be of interest to others. A Symposium Dinner will be held in the evening.

Day Four (31st August) will be dedicated to briefings on a range of heritage management issues including tourist access.
