How to Apply
Expressions of interest/ general applications
Applications should be submitted for a specific vacancy that has been advertised on our website. AMSA does not keep a register of general applications or resumes for future vacancies.
Application process
Prerequisites and required capabilities
The position description for a vacancy will outline the prerequisites, responsibilities and required capabilities for the job. In your application, you will be required to address:
- The prerequisites. These are the ‘must have’ qualifications, experience or skills for a particular role. You will be required to demonstrate these before you can proceed to shortlisting; and
- The required capabilities. These are the sets of behaviours which are important to the role. For each required capability, there are sub points to help you understand the meaning. You do not need to address each of these individually, but should provide actual, specific examples of how you have demonstrated that required capability – what you have done and how well you did it. Responses must be kept to a maximum of 150 words per required capability.
Application format
To apply for a position at AMSA, you must complete your application online. Our online application system can be accessed on our Current Vacancies page.

Confirmation of submission

Shortlisting
Applications will be assessed by the selection panel to determine, based on experience and responses to the required capabilities, which applicants have the strongest claims to the position.
Candidates who are shortlisted will be contacted and invited to attend an interview and complete the required psychometric testing (see below). Interviews will be held as soon as possible after the closing date, but timeframes will vary depending on the number of applications that are received.
Candidates who are not shortlisted will be informed via email once shortlisting is complete.
Interviews
Face-to-face interviews are preferred, however where this is not possible, telephone interviews will be conducted. The interview is designed to allow the panel to learn more about your skills and experience relative to the prerequisites and required capabilities listed in the position description, and will usually last for between 45 minutes and one hour.
The interview will be structured around a number of behavioural and technical questions. You will be asked to provide actual, specific examples to demonstrate your capability for the role. The interview is also an opportunity for you to ask questions about the role or AMSA.
Psychometric assessments
When inviting you to interview, the contact officer will inform you of the psychometric assessments which you are required to complete as part of the selection process. An Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ) will generally be required for all roles, and provides the panel with more information about your individual styles and behavioural preferences at work. You may also be required to complete a verbal or numerical reasoning test, or another type of test more relevant to the position.
The assessments provide the panel with additional perspectives on applicants, and are not pass/fail exercises. At the conclusion of the selection process, you can request feedback from the Human Resources team, who can be contacted on 02 6279 5674 or 02 62795671, or via email on recruitment@amsa.gov.au.
Referees
You may be requested to provide details of at least two referees who can comment on your recent work performance. Referees will generally be current or former managers or supervisors, and will be contacted by the selection panel for feedback. You should ensure that any nominated referees are aware of your application with AMSA and are willing to comment on your skills and work performance.
Feedback
You will be notified of the outcome of your application at the conclusion of the selection process. Verbal feedback about your performance at interview can be provided by a member of the selection panel, and they can direct you to a member of the Human Resources team if you would like feedback on your OPQ and ability test results.
Pre-employment checks
Upon or prior to commencement you will be required to provide proof of identity, proof of Australian citizenship, and copies of your relevant qualifications. You will also be required to undergo a National Police Check, and for certain roles, a security clearance.
