Mr Downer has been appointed High Commissioner designate to the United Kingdom, and plans to take up his appointment in London on 20 May. He has led an impressive career, serving as Australia's foreign minister from 1996 to 2007 and receiving a Centenary Medal for his contributions to Australian society in 2001. As Australia's Permanent Representative to the IMO, Mr Downer will work closely with Australia's Alternate Permanent Representative to the IMO, Anthony Hogan, to provide invaluable support for Australia through his engagement on key IMO issues.
