Update to exemption 06—periodic survey, equipment certification and compass adjustment

Monday 26 February 2018
Exemption 06 allows vessel owners apply to us for an extension of time for certain surveys.

From 1 April 2018, updates to Exemption 06 will provide more flexibility around when applications to us must be made, and allow extensions of time for load line certificate inspections.

What's changing

  • Applications for an extension of time on a due date for periodic survey or equipment certificate can be made 90 days before or after the due date. Previously it was not possible to apply for an extension after the due date had passed.
  • Exemption 06 can be applied to load line certificates, allowing owners of grandfathered vessels to apply for an extension on the due date for a load line certificates. Applications can be made 90 days before or after the due date.

We will only issue an approval if satisfied that the safety of the vessel or persons on board will not be jeopardised. We must also be satisfied that unreasonable or unnecessary expense would be incurred by the owner if the approval was not issued.

The approval may be subject to conditions that ensure the safety of the vessel and those on board, and require a report on the condition of the vessel or its equipment from an accredited marine surveyor.

There are no changes to the requirements on compass adjustment.

For more information read the summary of changes to Exemption 06.
