Choosing and installing a float-free EPIRB

A float-free EPIRB is a water activated EPIRB that is fitted in a float-free bracket.

From 1 January 2021, it will be mandatory for certain types of domestic commercial vessels to carry a float-free EPIRB.

Float-free EPIRBs activate when a vessel capsizes to a depth of 1 to 4 metres underwater. The hydrostatic function releases the EPIRB from its float-free bracket, and automatically activates through the water-activated switch.
