Marine Orders are a body of delegated legislation made pursuant to the Navigation Act 1912 and the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983. In response to changes in international law, industry requirements, and technological developments, the Marine Orders are regularly amended or repealed. Many of these amendments are in response to technical amendments to international conventions made through the International Maritime Organization. Where a Marine Order is repealed, a new issue is made. Approximately 13 amendments or re-issues are made a year.

Since January 2005, Marine Order re-issues and amendments are required to be registered with the Federal Register of Legislative Instruments (FRLI), and as such, the links to those documents are via the FRLI website. The Attorney-General's Department is responsible for maintenance of that site.

Marine Orders issued and amended before January 2005 continue to remain available on AMSA's Internet site.
