Exemption 43—Marine Safety (Extension of time—first aid and crewing)

Due to the current social isolation restrictions and uncertainty caused by COVID-19, and to assist operators during this period, we have exempted the master or crew to have a current first aid certificate where it has recently expired.

If a certificate of competency for a member of crew expires between 26 March 2020 and 1 January 2021 and the person is permitted to continue performing duties on the vessel under Exemption 42, or their first aid certificate has recently expired, the holder of the vessel’s certificate of operation is temporarily exempt for the conditions of the certificate regarding crewing and first aid certificates. The exemption expires 31 July 2021 or 12 months from the date the first aid certificate expired, whichever is earlier.

You do not need to apply for this exemption, it will happen automatically.

What this exemption will allow you to do

  • Permits crew, subject to this exemption, to work on a domestic commercial vessel for this extension period where their first aid certificate has recently expired.
  • Permits the vessel to be operated without breaching the conditions of a certificate of operation where the master or crew are performing duties uncertificated only because their certificate of competency recently expired and they are permitted to continue performing duties on the vessel under Exemption 42.
