Exemption 45 — Marine Safety (General Purpose Hand) Exemption 2022
This exempts a person who is performing the duties of a general purpose hand (GPH) from holding a GPH certificate of competency until 31 December 2023.

This temporary arrangement has been put in place to assist with the introduction of the new revised Marine Order 505 (Certificates of competency) on 1 January 2023. It gives certain individuals 12-months to apply for the GPH certificate of competency.
You do not need to apply to use this exemption.
What this exemption allows you to do
This exempts a person who is performing the duties of a GPH as set out in schedule 1 of Marine Order 505, from holding a GPH certificate of competency and provides alternative eligibility requirements until 31 December 2023.
This exemption automatically applies to you if:
- you have performed at least 30 days qualifying sea service in the five years leading up to January 2023, or
- you apply for a GPH certificate of competency before 1 January 2024.
