Spillcon 2016

Spillcon 2016 was held at Crown, Burswood in Perth, Western Australia from 2–6 May 2016.
The theme—Global, Regional, Local—brought together local, regional and global environmental and shipping representatives to discuss a range of issues around oil spill response. A number of exhibitors and equipment was showcased during the three-day conference. On the fourth day, a separate seminar was held to discuss response issues.
Attendees represented industry, government and non-government organisations. The keynote speakers represented a combined 50 years in the response industry. Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston spoke about the challenges or leading across organisations and industry boundaries during a response. Former Assistant Secretary for the US Department of Homeland Security Juliette Kayyem shared insights into crisis leadership in extreme events. Communications expert Trefor Munn-Venn spoke about leveraging the benefits of social media during an emergency situation.
Other issues discussed included cause and prevention, preparedness, response management and environmental issues. But the keynote speakers set the tone for a focus on strong, positive and responsive leadership at the global, regional and local levels. The conference provided an excellent opportunity for interactive debate between presenters and delegates.
