Australia was supported in the election by 143 of the 162 Member States present and now has the remarkable record of being on the IMO Council for almost 50 years and the first country to move from Category C to B.

The outcome is a reflection of Australia's maritime status. Re-election to IMO Council ensures Australia's interests are represented at the highest levels of international maritime policy making.

You can read more about the outcome from the joint statement issued by the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Infrastructure and Transport.
