The registration system on the AMSA website has been mobile-optimised, which is handy for updating and renewing beacon registration information from a mobile or tablet.

Providing proof of registration will also become easier, with beacon owners able to show beacon registration confirmation on their mobile phone or tablet, via SMS or email.

Beacon owners can save their SMS or email on their mobile as proof of registration to comply with the law.

AMSA Search and Rescue System Engagement and Policy Manager, Christine Macmillian, said the improved mobile system makes it easier for beacon owners to update their contact details or to let AMSA know if the beacon has been sold or disposed of.

'Registering your beacon is easy, free and can be done online via your PC, mobile phone, laptop or tablet,' Ms Macmillian said.

'This means AMSA has access to your emergency contacts to find out where you were are headed for your day on the water, on land or in the skies.

'Beacon owners can update their information and it's then updated with AMSA in real time.

'Having a registered beacon gives search and rescue authorities important information to provide a faster and more effective response.'

Beacon registration renewal will continue to be free and take place every two years.

Existing beacon registration renewal will continue to be free and renewals are needed every two years.
