Certificate services are changing

Saturday 2 June 2018
From 1 July 2018 services are changing for owners, operators, and crew of domestic commercial vessels. You'll get your certificates of survey and operation and crew qualification from us instead of your local marine safety agency.
National Martime System. One system to navigate. One set of rules. One point of contact. One set of fees.

You will also access a range of other maritime services including permits, exemptions, and equivalent means of compliance.

As well as new services, you may experience other changes depending on your type of operation or the work you do.

What's different for me? Applying for certificates

Certificate of survey

To obtain or renew a certificate of survey and/or load line certificate, the vessel must be surveyed and meet the specific design, construction, stability and safety equipment standards that are required for the vessel. Certificates are generally issued for a five-year period.

From 1 July 2018, you will need to apply for your certificate of survey through AMSA instead of your local marine safety agency.

Certificates of competency

To work on a commercial vessel you will generally need a current certificate of competency or an exemption.

From 1 July 2018, you will need to apply for your certificate of competency through AMSA instead of your local marine safety agency.

Renewing your certificate of competency from 1 July 2018

Certificates of competency are issued for a five-year period and must be renewed before the expiry date.

From 1 July 2018, you will need to renew your certificate of competency through AMSA instead of your local marine safety agency.

Certificates of operation

All domestic commercial vessels are required to have a certificate of operation unless they are exempt.

From 1 July 2018, you will need to apply for your Certificate of operation through AMSA< instead of your local marine safety agency.

To obtain or renew a certificate of operation, you must provide details of the vessel used in your operation, as well as how and where you intend to operate it. You must also have a safety management system in place, even if you are exempt from the requirement to have a certificate of operation.
