Countdown to low sulphur fuel cap

Wednesday 4 December 2019
From 1 January 2020, the sulphur content in marine fuel will decrease from 3.50 per cent m/m to 0.50 per cent m/m.

This will have environmental and health benefits, particularly for people living in coastal communities.

The new limit will apply globally to all vessels, including domestic operations such as passenger and vehicle ferries, superyachts, tugs and pilot vessels.

While heavy fuel oils used by larger vessels generally contain higher sulphur levels, most diesel and petrol sold in Australia as marine fuel already contains less than 0.50 per cent.

However, if you aren't sure about the sulphur content of your fuel, check with your supplier as penalties apply for non-compliance.

If your vessel is 400 gross tonnage or above, your supplier must give you a bunker delivery note (BDN) with each fuel delivery.

The BDN must contain specific details, including the sulphur content of your fuel.

Your supplier also needs to be registered with AMSA - check out our list of registered suppliers in your local area.

Be ready for 2020 - lack of preparation isn't an excuse for non-compliance.
