Nine helicopters from around NSW and AMSA’s Dornier 328 search and rescue plane from Essendon will search an area around Katoomba airfield from 0730 (AEDT).

The initial search will focus on the area immediately surrounding the Katoomba airfield and will expand outwards as the search progresses.

At about 1200 (AEDT) on Saturday 27 February a single engine aircraft with one person on board took off from Katoomba airfield.

At about 1715 (AEDT) an acquaintance of the pilot contacted AMSA Search and Rescue to report that the aircraft had failed to return to Katoomba.

The pilot is believed to have been conducting circuits in the area surrounding Katoomba airfield.

Updates will be released via AMSA’s website and Twitter account (@AMSA_News) as new information becomes available.
