Search underway for man overboard in Bass Strait

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is coordinating the search for a man who went overboard the Spirit of Tasmania I late on Friday night.

The passenger was reported to go overboard at 11.40pm on Friday during a voyage from Melbourne to Devonport, about 124km south of Melbourne.

AMSA Search and Rescue was advised at 12.10am and tasked two helicopters with night searching capabilities overnight, including the Victoria Police Air Wing.

The Spirit of Tasmania II is assisting in the search, along with two cargo ships, Sea Road Mersey and Victoria Reliance.

Four helicopters and AMSA’s dedicated search and rescue plane from Melbourne joined the search from first light.

Victoria Water Police are en route to the search area.
