Women in maritime

Friday 8 March 2019
Women have made significant contributions to the maritime industry even though only representing two percent of the world's documented 1.2 million seafarers.
International Women's Day 2019

AMSA's mission is to celebrate the achievements of women in maritime and drive awareness of the issues facing them in the hope of achieving gender equality in a historically male dominated industry.

Why is gender equality so important? Studies have proven that investing in women is the most effective way to advance communities, companies, and even countries. Gender equality creates balance, better job satisfaction and increases workplace productivity. Equality for women means progress and benefits for everyone.

Australia's International Women's Day theme is More powerful together. It takes all of us, working in collaboration to create a world where women and girls everywhere have equal rights and opportunities.

#MorePowerfulTogether is a call to stand in unison for gender equality.

AMSA encourages the conversation for gender equality in the maritime industry through a range of resources, publications, sponsorships and community engagement.

These initiatives also support the International Maritime Organization's 2019 World Maritime Day theme Empowering women in the maritime community.

Follow us on this important journey, join the discussion and let's be instigators of change that will see women in maritime achieve a representation that is in keeping with twenty-first century expectations.
