Maritime Labour Convention Annual Report 2024

Summary  

The Maritime Labour Convention 2006 (MLC) sets international standards for seafarer living and working conditions. AMSA monitors compliance by responding to complaints from seafarers and carrying out inspections on vessels operating in or visiting Australian waters. 

The annual report shares key findings from 2024, including the number and type of complaints received, and inspection and compliance activities conducted by AMSA.

In 2024

  • AMSA received 173 complaints — a 19% decrease from 2023 
  • 63% of complaints were lodged directly by seafarers 
  • 62% of complaints involved bulk carriers 
  • 28.3% of complaints related to wages  
  • 934 MLC related deficiencies were found during inspections 
  • 9 vessels were detained for serious breaches of MLC requirements
