Revalidate your domestic certificate of competency from overseas

This is a domestic qualification for operating in Australian waters.

If you hold a domestic certificate of competency and live overseas you can revalidate your certificate with us

Revalidate your certificate before it expires if it has not been suspended or revoked. If your certificate is valid or expired, the revalidation requirements are the same.

If you hold a domestic certificate of competency and live overseas you can revalidate your certificate with us. You will need to meet the following requirements for revalidation. 

Standard revalidation

Applies to low complexity certificates of competency:

  • General purpose hand near coastal
  • Coxswain grade 2 near coastal
  • Coxswain grade 1 near coastal
  • Master less than 24 metres near coastal
  • Master (inland waters)
  • Marine engine driver grade 3 near coastal
  • Marine engine driver grade 2 near coastal

Other revalidation  

Applies to high complexity certificates of competency:

  • Master less than 35 metres near coastal
  • Mate less than 80 metres near coastal
  • Master less than 80 metres near coastal
  • Marine engine driver grade 1 near coastal
  • Engineer class 3 near coastal

What type of revalidation do you need to apply for?

Standard revalidation

To apply for a standard revalidation you will need to:

Submit documents

Submit the following with your completed Certificate of competency form 426:

  • Certified copy of your proof of identity.
  • Current approved first aid certificate of at least HLTFA Apply first aid or another certificate that we consider to be equivalent. You do not need to submit this if you are renewing a Coxswain Grade 2 near coastal with no passenger endorsement.
  • Copies of your original certificate.
  • Payment of the renewal fee, this can be by credit card over the phone or by using the domestic credit card authorisation form.

Lodge from overseas

You will need to attach all required supporting documents and send the paperwork to us at our postal or courier address:

To apply for an other revalidation you will need to:

Meet medical and eyesight requirements

Download the:

1. Eyesight test certificate

The Eyesight test certificate form 542 lets us know that your eyesight meets the necessary standard for working at sea.

If you are colour blind, you will be restricted to working in daylight hours only.

2. Certificate of medical fitness for a near coastal certificate

The Certificate of medical fitness for a near coastal certificate lets us know that you are medically fit to work at sea.

Provide the medical practitioner with the Guidelines for the medical assessment of near coastal seafarers.

If you have a current AMSA medical (Certificate of medical fitness form 303) you can use this in place of the Eyesight test certificate and Certificate of medical fitness for a near coastal certificate.

You must submit your completed form(s) as part of your Certificate of competency application form 426.

Provide evidence of sea service

You need to show you have experience working at sea as officer of the watch or undertaking engineering tasks, for duties of the kind to which the certificate applies.

You must have completed:

  • 120 days on commercial vessels within the past 5 years.

If the required sea service is not available you must complete either:

  • an approved revalidation course
  • an approved final assessment
  • 60 days qualifying sea service accrued in the 6 months before the application
  • for a seasonal fisher—like an abalone fisher—have worked in a seasonal fishery for at least 120 days in the 5 years before the application
  • have other approved industry experience—for example State or Territory marine safety agency assessor or operational employee, fleet manager, shore-side servicing, teaching at a registered training organisation for marine studies, marine surveyor
  • a task book approved by the National Regulator for the certificate.

If you have completed a task book you must attach a copy of the seafarer details page to your application.

If your certificate holds a sheltered waters restriction and at least half of your sea service is not seaward of sheltered waters, your certificate will remain restricted to sheltered waters.

You need to submit at least one of the following as proof of qualifying sea service:

  • Record of sea service form 771
  • an approved sea service log book
  • the on board sea service record from your task book
  • a letter from the vessel operator, owner, master or chief engineer detailing your sea service.
