The purpose of the ASSB is to help you keep a personal record of your sea service. The ASSB is a record of service only and should not be used as a document of identity for the purpose of the International Labour Organisation Convention No. C185.
The ASSB does not replace an employment contract required by the Maritime Labour Convention.
We will not accept responsibility for records entered into an ASSB, nor for use of the information it contains. If you need the records in your ASSB verified, you should advise prospective employers and other interested parties to contact the owner or operator of the ship(s) concerned.
Application process
To be eligible to apply for an ASSB you must already possess a current STCW certificate from us.
The minimum standards for these qualifications are set out in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978.
Complete the form
Download and complete Seafarer form 419.
Provide proof of qualifications
Provide evidence that you have a current certificate of marine qualification issued by us.
Provide proof of identification
Provide identity by either showing a current Australian driver’s licence or valid passport.
Provide a passport photograph
Provide a recent colour passport photograph (taken by Australia Post at time of lodgement).
Pay fees
Pay the required charge at Australia Post—this will be calculated automatically as Seafarer form 419 is completed.
