Now available—your feedback on international requirements for fishing gear marking and reporting

To help Australia shape new international requirements, we asked for your views on the marking of fishing gear and the reporting of lost or discharged fishing gear.
As part of efforts to reduce the amount of plastic waste entering oceans from vessels, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is introducing mandatory international requirements on the marking of fishing gear and expanding existing reporting requirements for lost and discharged fishing gear. Work at the IMO is now underway to develop the details of these global requirements.
To inform this work, between November 2022 - January 2023 we sought your views and advice. The feedback received will be used to develop Australia's position on the new international requirements. This position will be taken to the next meeting of the IMO scheduled for April 2023.
We received 10 submissions during the consultation period, from a variety of stakeholders. To find out more about this consultation process and outcomes, read the full consultation feedback report.
