Meet Desley Thompson, AMSA's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Safety Liaison Advisor.
AMSA's Safety Liaison Advisor, Desley Thompson

Life along Australia's northern coastline and in the Torres Strait region revolves around the water. Living on Country in these areas means Sea Country as well as Land Country. These beautiful marine environments carry risk. Many communities rely on seaborne transport, especially in the wet season when roads are cut off. Often this involves travel in small open boats across long stretches of open ocean. Our Safety Liaison Advisor, Desley Thompson, is working with coastal communities to ensure they can stay safe on and around Sea Country now and into the future.

Maritime safety for the generations

Desley's role sees her working with communities around Australia's northern coastline and throughout the Torres Strait region to ensure people are aware of safety management principles and can employ them when they are on the water. Based in AMSA's Cairns office, Desley travels to communities to work with all ages to provide information and training on maritime safety. In this way, AMSA is assisting to improve communities' maritime safety now and for future generations.
