AMSA Community Information Day in Brisbane

Wednesday 7 November 2012
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is taking the opportunity to meet people in Brisbane who work in the maritime sector and showcase a number of changes that will be taking place in 2013.

AMSA is the national regulator responsible for shipping safety and management, protection of the marine environment and land and sea search and rescue.

Next year will see the introduction of a number of reforms including the overhaul of century-old laws and the establishment of a national system for commercial domestic vessel safety, replacing eight existing sets of regulations.

Interested community members are encouraged to attend the information sessions to meet with AMSA staff to learn more about the core areas of AMSA’s business and how it may impact their business or lifestyle.

AMSA’s Community Information Day in Brisbane will provide an overview of AMSA’s activities including:

  • Marine environment protection including oil spill response
  • Ship safety and shipping management including aids to navigation and vessel tracking
  • Search and rescue including case studies of recent rescues
  • Maritime reform including changes applicable to every commercial vessel sailing in Australian waters.

As an island nation, maritime activity impacts Australians’ everyday life including imports and exports, fishing and tourism, search and rescue and marine environment protection.

AMSA is leading the world in ensuring on-water activities are safe and sustainable.

The Community Information Days will be held around the country to include all areas which rely on the maritime industries for the economic and social benefits they provide.
