The Australian Government today released a plan for managing shipping traffic in the Great Barrier Reef, Torres Strait and Coral Sea.
North-East Shipping Management Plan

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Warren Truss, said the North-East Shipping Management Plan (NESMP) was developed over a period of two years and takes into account projected growth in shipping to the year 2032.

'While the Great Barrier Reef, Torres Strait and Coral Sea are among the best-protected waters in the world, the Australian Government is committed to ensuring these sensitive areas remain that way,' Mr Truss said.

The NESMP was jointly developed by Queensland and Australian Government agencies in conjunction with industry and key interest groups.

'We hope that this plan will increase community awareness and understanding of Australia's stringent shipping management regime, while assisting decision-makers to determine priorities, provides a strategic guide and sets out a program of proposed options to be pursued that will improve safety and bolster environmental safeguards,' Mr Truss said.

AMSA led the development of the North-East Shipping Management Plan, which is available to view and download on our website.
