Reviewing our approach to how we develop standards for domestic commercial vessels

Tuesday 23 July 2019

To ensure standards remain fit for purpose for the domestic industry, we are reviewing our approach to setting standards.

We are responsible for developing and maintaining the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV)-the contemporary technical standard for domestic commercial vessels.

To ensure the standards remain fit for purpose for the domestic industry, we are reviewing our approach to setting standards.  The review will consider the development, format and communication of the standards-not the technical content.

We know that there are a mixed range of views on how the standards could be clearer and more user-friendly, which we want to explore further.

During August 2019, we will be consulting with a targeted sample of individual stakeholders with a focus on those who have regular, direct interaction with the technical standards.  These may include boat designers/builders, fleet managers, accredited marine surveyors and industry associations.

Please note that we have no plans for changes to the technical requirements to the NSCV outside of our published regulatory program.
