In the next 6 months, many certificates of operation and certificates of survey will be due for renewal.

Make sure you apply early to ensure that there is time for your application to be processed before your current certificate expires. Although we will send reminder notices three months prior to the expiry date by post, we encourage operators to apply early.

To renew your certificate of survey

  • Contact your accredited marine surveyor or recognised organisation to book in the required renewal surveys.
  • Renewal surveys can be conducted anytime in the six months prior to the expiry date of the current certificate. This will not adversely affect your expiry date, the new certificate will have 5 years validity from the expiry date, not the actual survey date.
  • Encourage your surveyor to upload the survey reports directly to AMSA systems - to reduce processing times.
  • To renew your certificate use AMSA form 521. A fee is payable to renew your certificate

To renew your certificate of operation

  • If you have a fleet of vessels and separate certificates for each vessel - consider consolidating all your vessels onto a single certificate of operation when you make your first renewal. Where possible, please provide a copy of all the current certificates with your application.
  • If you would like to renew your certificate, can provide a copy of the current certificate and do not want to make any changes, you can apply using AMSA Form 553. A fee is payable to renew your certificate.
  • If you would like to renew your certificate, are unable to provide a copy of the current certificate,  please apply using AMSA form 504 and select the new a certificate option. A fee is payable to renew your certificate.
  • If you want to make changes or consolidate all your vessels into a single certificate you will need to select the option to 'make a change' or 'apply for a new certificate' on the AMSA form 504. A fee is payable.

NSW vessels still under NSAMS level 3

The National Standard for Administration of Marine Safety Section 3 (NSAMS level 3) no longer applies.

  • AMSA is aware that there are a number of vessels in NSW that have certificates of survey that were not previously subject to ongoing periodic (or renewal) surveys.
  • Due to changes to the law in 2018, those vessels are now required to undergo survey in order to renew their certificates of survey.
  • Many NSW vessel certificates will be due for renewal in 2021. In 2018, AMSA sent certificate holders an updated certificate of survey, the updated survey requirements and due dates.
  • Check if you received an updated certificate - if one was not received, you may need to provide AMSA with your current contact details (address, phone numbers, email). You can contact us on 1800 627 484.
  • Contact your accredited marine surveyor or recognised organisation to book in the required renewal surveys. Provide the survey codes that are listed on the reminder letter. If you haven't received the survey codes then proceed to make a renewal application, and the codes will automatically be sent to you.
  • Renewal surveys can be conducted anytime in the six months prior to the expiry date of the current certificate.
  • Encourage your surveyor to upload the survey reports directly to AMSA systems - to reduce processing times.
  • To renew your certificate, you must make a renewal application using AMSA form 521. A fee is payable to renew your certificate.
