A Coxswain Grade 3 near coastal certificate of competency is valid for 5 years. To keep working, you need to apply to renew your certificate before it expires.

What do I need to do?

To renew your certificate you need to:

Declare your medical fitness

As part of the renewal application process, we will ask you to declare that you are medically fit to work at sea. This includes declaring any changes to your eyesight.

If your existing Coxswain Grade 3 certificate has a daylight hours restriction, this restriction will be carried across to your renewed certificate.

Provide existing certificates

You will need to provide the following certificates:

• a copy of your existing Coxswain Grade 3
• a first aid certificate (HLTAID011 'Provide first aid' certificate, or equivalent).

Submit your application

To apply:

1. Gather the required documents:
   • your existing Coxswain Grade 3 certificate
   • a first aid certificate (HLTAID011 'Provide first aid' certificate, or equivalent).
2. Complete and print the Certificate of competency application form 426.
3. Submit the form with copies of the required documents at a participating Australia Post outlet. You will also need to provide proof of your identity.
