Proposed changes to lifesaving equipment requirements

We sought feedback on proposed changes to Marine Order 25 (Equipment – lifesaving) 2014 (MO25). MO25 sets out requirements for carrying and testing life-saving equipment and recovering people from water.

What changes did we seek feedback on?

We sought feedback on the proposed changes to Marine Order 25 (Equipment - lifesaving) 2014 which sets out the requirements for carrying and testing lifesaving equipment, how these requirements apply to different vessels and the recovery of persons from the water.

Marine Order 25 gives effect to Chapter III of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Life-Saving Appliance (LSA) Code.

The proposed changes clarify the application and purpose of the Marine Order and update references to standards relevant to safety equipment required by SOLAS.

Key changes

The proposed changes:

  • reference current beacon requirements for liferafts
  • clarify the application of the LSA code to certain regulated Australian vessels and foreign vessels
  • clarify the maintenance, testing, inspection and servicing of life-saving appliances
  • incorporate LSA requirements for lowering speed of launching appliances using falls and a winch.
