Australia is a major maritime nation, with 99 per cent of our international trade carried by sea.
Having safe, secure and sustainable shipping is vital to our economy, our environment, our communities and our connection to the world.
The maritime sector is changing quickly. New technologies are creating opportunities to improve safety, boost efficiency and support more sustainable shipping practices.
At the same time, global economies continue to face disruptions and supply chain pressures.
That’s why protecting seafarer welfare and strengthening supply chains remain important. Together, they help keep goods moving safely and reliably around the world, which supports global trade and economic stability.
Australia remains committed to working with our international partners to advance these goals.
I am also pleased to announce Australia's candidacy for re-election to Category B of the IMO Council for the 2028-29 biennium. Through our continued participation on the IMO Council, Australia will champion a rules-based maritime order and remain a constructive and trusted voice in shaping global standards for maritime safety, security, environmental protection and seafarer welfare.
We will continue to work with our regional and international partners to deliver practical outcomes that strengthen the global maritime sector.
