Seafarers recognise strong welfare support in Australian ports

Seafarers visiting Australian ports say welfare services are highly valued, but access remains a key challenge.

The 2025 Seafarer Welfare Survey, based on 436 responses from a diverse range of vessels, ports and nationalities, shows Australia’s welfare services are often regarded as among the best internationally. Organisations such as Stella Maris, Flying Angel and Mission to Seafarers were widely praised for their support.

However, the survey highlights a clear message, access to services matters just as much as the services themselves.

Access to Wi-Fi and shore leave were identified as the top priorities for seafarers. Safe access to shore and timely medical care were also seen as critical to wellbeing.

The most significant issue is limited access to shore leave. Many seafarers reported they are rarely able to go ashore, even when services are available. Short port stays, operational demands and limited transport options were the main barriers.

Transport between ship and shore was identified as a key enabler. Seafarers highlighted the need for more flexible options, including access for taxis and ride-share services within ports.

While experiences vary across ports and vessel types, the findings provide a clear and consistent picture of seafarers lived experience.

These insights will help inform ongoing work with industry and partners to improve access to services and support seafarer wellbeing in Australian ports.
