Overview
You can use this form to:
- apply for a specific exemption under section 143 of the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012
- revoke a specific exemption.

Eligibility criteria
If you apply for an exemption, you must demonstrate that you have extraordinary reasons for not complying with the applicable requirements, and the proposed exemption must not jeopardise the safety of vessels or people.
How to complete this form
- Apply for a new special exemption
Providing as much clearly presented, relevant detail as possible will speed up the assessment process. You may wish to include:
- photographs
- surveyor reports
- copies of previous or related approvals or permits
- drawings and any other documentation that will help us to understand your request.
- Apply as an organisation, registered partnership or trust
If you're applying as an organisation or registered partnership, you'll need to provide your ABN or ACN.
If you're applying as a trust, you must provide a copy of the relevant pages of the trust deed that identify all current trustees, their names and details. Information about the operation or administration of the trust is not required.
Please don't submit an application without this documentation. We cannot process your application without it.

Fees
The form will show you fee advice based on 1 1/2 hours of processing and assessment time.
If after receiving your application, AMSA considers that the assessment time will be longer than the original fee charged, you will be sent an updated fee estimate that includes the estimated number of hours of assessment required to finalise your application. At that time, you can decide if you would like to pay the additional fee for your application to progress or withdraw your application.
Submit a complete application
Double-check that your application is complete before submitting to avoid delay or loss of fee.
If the application is incomplete, we will get back to you to request the missing information which will stop progress. If you don’t provide the missing information within a month, your application may be closed with loss of fee in keeping with our incomplete application policy.
