Digital transformation - MAKING SHIPPING OPERATIONS SAFER AND MORE EFFICIENT

ECDIS integration

New data services provide accurate and up-to-date information. But they need new data architectures and systems to support them.

To access digital services, ships will need to update onboard systems. As an example, the International Maritime Organisation is writing new standards for the exchange of voyage plans and route information.  New products that apply these standards in the ECDIS will be available as early as 2026.

New onboard information systems will:

  • receive enhanced Maritime Safety Information along a planned route
  • process under-keel clearance management data in real-time
  • exchange routes digitally with Vessel Traffic Services
  • plot weather reports and forecasts on the ECDIS
  • access other services, such as port-call, just-in-time arrival, virtual AtoN or chart updates

This will also support system integrator functions. (System integrators collect information from different systems for situational awareness.) Integrated systems centred around ECDIS will support decision-making.
