Marine order 505—Certificates of competency—national law

General information about certificates of competency.

Commenced 1 July 2017

Marine order 505 includes:

  • kinds of certificates that may be issued
  • application requirements for a certificate of competency
  • criteria which must be met for AMSA to issue a certificate of competency
  • conditions on a certificate of competency
  • endorsements of existing certificates
  • requirements for renewing, varying, suspending and revoking a certificate
  • key definitions.

We are reviewing this marine order and Part D (Crew competencies) of the National Standard for Commercial Vessels.

Consultation on proposed changes to Marine order 505 closed on 29 September 2019.

The valuable feedback received from industry has helped us to clarify and improve the requirements for Australian near coastal seafarer certification.

We are working towards having the amended Marine order 505 ready in coming months which will also include an appropriate transition period for industry to comply.

We will update you via AMSA Update once final timelines for the new marine order have been determined.
